Grenada
Guard instructor Wins World Championship
Kim
Spaeth Presley, guard instructor for the Grenada
Band Program, has been recognized at the WGI World Championship
held in Dayton, Ohio, on April 11-13, 2002. Her training of the Irondale
High School Winter Guard from New Brighton, Minnesota, enabled them
to be crowned 2002 WGI Scholoastic Open Class World Champions. Winter
guard is an indoor aspect of the color guard activity. The field of
competition consists of a regulation size basketball court. Shows are
choreographed to pre-recorded music. Flags, rifles, and sabers are used
in combination with modern dance to provide visual representation of
the music. Kim stated,"My responsibility was to develop the show's
overall concept and to design the choreography for about 60% of the
show. A lot of the work was completed at the winter camp held over Christmas
holidays. Other work was taught by video tape." Twenty-five high school
students participated in the group. The students wore navy velvet unitards
and used flags designed in shades of yellow, blue, and raspberry. |
