GSD Parent of the Year selected...
The Grenada School District has selected Smiley Arrington, nominated by Grenada High School, as the District-wide Parent of the Year for 2011. He has two children, Morgan, a graduate of GHS, and Smiley Arrington, III, a sophomore at GHS. Smiley, an insurance adjuster for Farm Bureau, is married to Debra Arrington, a teacher in the multi-age program at Grenada Upper Elementary. Smiley has been actively involved with several organizations assisting our District including volunteering his time and assistance in the preparation of meals for football and soccer games, and participating in the Grenada High Visions and Band Programs. He has served as the Vice-President of the Band Boosters Club since 2009.
Visions Parent Brenda Clark says, “Mr. Arrington has been working with Visions since 2002. He has done anything asked of him, which has included purchasing a Santa Suit and playing the part of Santa Claus in our Christmas Production!”
Smiley has served with the Visions and Band programs building and transporting props, cooking for events, chaperoning, setting up the stage and performance areas, and loading and unloading trucks. Grenada High School Principal Jerry Williams states, “He is dedicated to helping our children and serves as a role model and an upstanding citizen in our community.”
Band Secretary Cindy Willis states, “He grills the food we sell in the concession stand, helps build props, helps get all of the props on and off the field for every performance, and drives our equipment truck. He is always concerned with putting the needs of our children first.”
Smiley is a deacon at First Baptist Church and also serves as Sunday school director and teacher, a training union teacher, and a youth trip chaperone for summer missions. He also finds time to serve on the Yalobusha General Hospital Board, Renasant Bank Board, and volunteers for the Coffeeville and Yalobusha County Fire Department. He has served as treasurer of the Grenada Youth League for the past three years, as well as, serving as a softball and baseball coach, and a cook in the concession stand. Grenada High School and Grenada School District are fortunate to receive the assistance from a parent so deeply involved and so committed the students. Congratulations to the 2011 Parent of the Year, Smiley Arrington.
