NNDCC Pelican Game

Earlier this year, the Grenada High School Navy National Defense Cadet Corps Color Guard was invited to host the National Colors for the New Orleans Pelicans' basketball game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Fortunately, the game, held in New Orleans at The Smoothie King Center, fell during the cadet's spring break. This allowed the cadets to tour some historic museums both in and on the way to New Orleans.

The Color Guard entourage first stopped at Camp Shelby National Guard Base, located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to tour the museum there that showcases famous Mississippi veterans that served in the Armed Services. The Museum also displays memorabilia from the Civil War, WWI, Spanish American War, and the Vietnam Conflict. Tanks, helicopters, planes, and other vehicles are on display for photo ops and exploration. The museum plans to add new exhibitions acknowledging the Gulf War and WWII soon.

Next, the Cadets visited the World War II Museum in New Orleans. This huge museum encompasses two city blocks of downtown New Orleans! At the museum, cadets took advantage of the opportunity to speak with veterans from various wars. The WWII Museum features different parts of the war and the vehicles that were used. Many types of aircraft stand on display throughout the museum, as well as several tanks, jeeps, and boats. Cadets also enjoyed movies about the war and several interactive displays at the venue.

After touring the WWII Museum, the group traveled to the Smoothie King Center to prepare for the game. The Color Guard team was allowed early entry to the stadium for practice, and afterward they observed players from both professional basketball teams practice. The NNDCC team, which consists of four seniors and one junior, reveled in the once-in-a-lifetime performance in front of such a large crowd. They hope the invitation to perform at another Pelicans' game next year will be extended to their unit. They also plan to explore the possibility of performing at games for the Memphis Grizzlies and other teams.

The cadets made the most of their Spring Break and are already making plans for next year's trip. While each cadet pays for his or her own trip, money from fundraisers helps ease the financial burden. NNDCC Discount Cards are still available for sale for $5.00 - half off the regular price. The cards can be used both in Grenada and outside Grenada as well. The cards are good through May 2017; new ones will be made available as soon as possible. Grenada NNDCC would like to thank their sponsors for their support this year: Walmart, Southern Flight HRC, R&S Cleaners, Booster Club, McAllister's, No Way Jose, La Cabaña, Applebee's, and all of the individuals that help make our activities a reality.
