Lights, Camera, Action!

Lights, Cameras, Action! The red carpet, along with a limo, rolled out at Grenada Elementary and Grenada Upper Elementary last week for the premiere of the new Mississippi Department of Education’s Move to Learn videos. Local paparazzi were also present to record the event for history as the stars (local Grenada School District students) arrived for the event. Shot last year at the school, the videos promote increased fitness and academic achievement and feature approximately 90 Grenada School District students in first, second, fourth, and seventh grades.

The Move to Learn program, which partners with The Bower Foundation, creates the series of age specific, five to six minute exercise videos and lesson plans for classrooms. The videos are designed to help teachers raise the fitness levels of their students, and in turn, raise their academic achievement. Students love the videos as they allow them a break from normal classroom activities and a chance to get up and work off some energy!

GSD students chosen to participate in the videos possess high energy levels, good rhythm, and great behavior. Last year, we told you about the development of the videos and that every aspect of the Move To Learn initiative was created and developed by Mississippians. The website itself and all the promotional materials were created and developed by a Mississippi-based marketing firm. Mississippi musicians wrote and recorded the music used in the videos, and the videos themselves are filmed by a Mississippi-based production company. All the schools and students featured in the videos are real Mississippians, including the stars of the videos, Coach Larry Calhoun and Coach Terry Leigh Clayton. Calhoun and Clayton both actually coach at schools in Mississippi and create the choreography and perform with the students in the videos. Calhoun and Clayton visited GES last year to prepare and film the videos, much to the excitement of local students. Teachers at GES and GUES use the videos for inside recess, so students immediately recognized Calhoun and Clayton when they appeared in the halls of the school the first time.

Students who participated in the videos experienced the spectacular event by arriving at school in a limo and walking down a red carpet just like movie stars, while students from GES, GUES, and GMS attended the premier of the videos just like real A-listers! Due to the number of students in attendance and limited seating space, several different time slots for the videos were scheduled. Students attended in grade-level groups and enjoyed watching their peers’ first starring roles in a video event!
