A tour of Grenada Middle School immediately demonstrates to the visitor the commitment to quality education. The walls have been transformed into teaching tools through the use of timelines, sculptures, and paintings and the court yard provides an experience into the early days of Mississippi Choctaw Indians through the replication of an authentic Indianhomestead.
At the Grenada Middle School the curriculum extends beyond the ordinary in basic, supplementary, and remedial courses to enable every student to excel. Emphasis is placed upon language and writing in combination with organizational and study skills necessary for effective communication. The English department recognizes the value of literature as it widens a student’s perspective through drama, novels, and short stories. The develop-ment of each student’s reading skills is stressed through the innovative use of technology and standard instruction. Reading REALMS, a locally developed reading program, is used throughout GMS to encour-age children to read independently and to develop a lifetime enthusiasm for reading. The school library constantly adds titles that are of interest to students and teachers, assisting in the educational process of the entire school.
Accommodating students of any achievement level, the mathematics curriculum focuses on fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, geometry, equations, and word problems. Pre-algebra and Algebra I are offered to high achievers and Math counts and MCTH Math Tournaments provide local and regional competition. Accelerated Math, a nationally recognized technology based mathematics curriculum, allows individualized math instruction for students in select classes at each grade level.

Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science build on the basics learned in K-5 grades. Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to ask questions, observe, experiment, measure, gather data, problem solve/reason, use computers and calculators, tools of science, and to communicate findings. Important other areas included in study units are safety skills, current events, environmental issues, hands-on activities, and participation in science fairs. These studies stimulate the interests of the students and enable young scientists to learn science concepts and develop higher-level thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Social studies includes world history, Mississippi history, and American history. Structured to create responsible, informed citizens and leaders, the courses encompass different cultures, geography, current events, government, traditions, and values. Through Grenada Middle School’s nationally recog-nized Junior Historical Society, students have the opportunity to compete in state and national contests demon-strating their knowledge and appreciation of history and its relationship to current events.
The “Partners in Education” program enables Grenada businesses to express their support for a strong school system by increasing their involvement with our students. Every nine weeks a community business rewards stu-dents who have achieved at least 80% of their Accelerated Reading Program goals with a special field trip or prize.
Grenada Middle School’s curriculum in physical education contributes to the development of versatile individuals through physical development and competition in interscholastic programs such as football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, and tennis.
An outstanding band program provides instruction at each grade level in concert and marching band and prepares students for participating in the Grenada High School’s nationally award winning band. Musical talents are further encouraged through choral music
classes. Students may choose
to participate in the competitive choirs or in the school’s showchoir, positions available through auditions. Selected students perform as school ambassadors at state competitions,school events, and throughout the community. Artistically talented students are encour-aged through gifted art classes, a program providing valuable visual experiences in studio activities, intellectual study, evaluation, and critique.
An average of two computers are Internet connected in each classroom providing the teacher and students with a virtually boundless supply of resources. A fully connected, state-of-the-art Internet lab is designated for class projects and individual assignments. The library offers a station of computers empowering the students with worldwide access to information.
Exploration of technological processes is provided by two new Redesign courses, Information and Communication Technology I and II (ICT I and II) which present contem-porary skills to the young learners. ICT I begins to prepare seventh graders with the technology literacy, workforce, and academic skills necessary to compete in the global world. They also study interpersonal and self-directional skills, input applications, databases, graphic and web design applications, networking, problem solving and decision making with technology tools, and technology operationsrelated to social, ethical, and human issues.
