GES Poets Receive Recognition

Three GES students, Alyssa Campbell, Emma Johnson, and Lindsey Ingram have been selected as poetry winners and will soon be published poets. Their third grade LEAP teacher, Angie McElwrath, submitted their work to the National Schools Project to compete in the poetry contest. The purpose of the National Schools Project is to encourage student writing and provide an audience for student poetry. Schools across the nation were invited to participate in the project.
The poems submitted were reviewed by teachers and other educators who selected the poems based on their creativity, language, imagery, structure, and technique. This year’s featured poetry form was haiku.
As chosen winners, the three students’ poems will be published in the 17th Edition of the Young American Poetry Digest. The GES library will also receive a complimentary copy for its collection. Librarian Lynne Marascalco explained the importance of publication, “In the elementary school setting, opportunities for students to share their writing with a large audience are limited. This is a real honor to have our students, especially students from this age group, published by a national digest. It speaks volumes about the quality of student work here at Grenada Elementary School.”
