Using Data Analysis to Work Smarter, Not Harder

In education, as with any industry, the process of accumulating and analyzing data is vital for growth. Data analyses are used to guide all types of decisions made at the district, school, department, and instruction levels. Administrators and teachers can use this data to work smarter, not harder.

School leaders accumulate data from a variety of sources, such as the Mississippi Curriculum Test 2, Subject Area Tests, District Common Assessments, weekly tests, and pretests. As data is accumulated, the data is organized and analyzed at all levels. The data analyses are used by administrators to plan annual budgets, by instructional specialists to determine the needs of the students and teachers, and by teachers to drive planning and classroom instruction. Individual student data provides teachers with the strengths and weaknesses of each student, allowing teachers to modify and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of individual students. For example, at the end of each nine weeks, students take a District Common Assessment. Student responses are accumulated through an Internet-based program, allowing teachers to analyze data based on specified areas of content. Using this information, teachers can meet each student’s needs by planning remedial activities to help ensure mastery of content or by providing enrichment activities to deepen understandings of concepts already mastered.

The process of collecting and analyzing data is ongoing, occurring throughout the school year and into the summer months. Conducting data analyses is essential in taking proactive steps to continually improve teaching and learning. By analyzing and using data, administrators, instructional specialists, and teachers can better prepare students for success on high-stakes, end-of-year testing and for college and career readiness.
