State Tests Document District Academic Growth
Most of Grenada School District’s students have experienced outstanding academic achievement since the new educational accountability system was implemented in 2007 by the Mississippi Department of Education. Student results are interpreted by comparisons of a measurement tool called, “QDI”. QDI is calculated using the students’ results on the state test and is used to rank schools according to performance. In the 2007-2008 school year, Grenada students scored a 144, one point below the state average on the Quality of Distribution Index (QDI). Grenada’s QDI in the 2008-2009 school year was 155 - six points above the state average. In 2009-2010, Grenada’s QDI increased to 166 - eleven points above the state average. This past school year, Grenada students’ scores improved even more to a QDI of 172 - fourteen points above the state average. All of the schools in Grenada School District have exhibited exceptional performances over the past 4 years by improving student academic achievement. Grenada High School’s QDI improved from a score of 155 in 2008 to 198 in 2011. Grenada Middle School’s QDI progressed from a score of 144 in 2008 to 181 in 2011. The Grenada Upper Elementary School’s QDI increased from a score of 138 in 2008 to 154 in 2011. Grenada Elementary School’s QDI in 2008 was 146 compared to 168 in 2011. These results show a consistent pattern of improving student performance under the new state accountability model.
The new accountability model labels all school districts and schools with a performance label. In 2011, Grenada School District was labeled a Successful district. The High School was also labeled as Successful. The Middle School was labeled as High Performing, placing the Middle School in the top 25 percent of the schools in the State of Mississippi. The Elementary School did not receive a label due to the fact that elementary students take the state test for the first time in the 3rd grade. Therefore, growth cannot be determined for first time test takers. If labeled, however, the elementary school, with a QDI of 168, would place in the range of Successful to High Performing.
