Teacher of the Year
Barbara Montgomery, the 2011-2021 Teacher of the Year, is currently a Special Education Teacher at Grenada High School. Barbara has been married to Melvin Montgomery for 35 years, and they have three children: Melvin Jr., Lakicha, and Bethany. She has one grandson Isiah. All of her children went through the Grenada School System. They have lived in Grenada for 24 years. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Rust College and her Master’s Degree from Delta State University. Mrs. Montgomery is currently a teacher in our occupational diploma track.
The Administrative team at Grenada High School states, "Mrs. Montgomery has 29 years of experience in Special Education. She loves her job and takes all aspects of it seriously. She always has a smile on her face and never complains. From completing her IEP’s to teaching, her dedication to her students is unmatchable. She does whatever it takes to help her students succeed, not only in school, but in life. For example, she has taken time out of her life to teach a student for the past three years after school. This particular student has had problems that prevented her from attending school with other students. Mrs. Montgomery helped the student upgrade her skills and enabled the student to graduate this year."
Mrs. Montgomery describes her successful teaching philosophy by stating, " I believe all students have the potential to learn on his/her ability level. Twenty-nine years have given me proof of this statement. I believe the key to educating a student is to let the student know that you care. Always give positive reinforcement and motivte the student to do the best job possible. I always tell my students, "Yes, you can be successful if you continue to work on your goal."
Mrs. Montgomery is also very involved in the community as well. She is Director of Christian Education at Faith and Grace Missionary Baptist Church and a Youth Christian Education Instructor for the Grenada Baptist District Association.
